Engagement Rule 19 for Leaders: Hire Only the Cream of the Crop

Hire the best of the best. Do not hire just to fill the position. Hire someone to expand the position. You expand the position by bringing in talent that will raise the bar for that position. They say all ships rise in high tide, so look a bar raiser. If you hire to fill the position, you are taking a chance people will challenge your ability to change the organization. If the new employee is a star, you are a hero. But if you hire a dud, you move from hero to zero. The one constant truth is that you will make mistakes when you hire. Learn from your miss-hires and do not repeat them.
