Leaders need to be respected before they are liked. People want to follow someone that they believe can lead them no matter what. If you are liked, people may not feel your energy or passion. They will not take you seriously unless they respect you. It is essential you follow through on what you say. Treat everyone as fairly as possible. People respect consistency and equality.
